3 Easy how-to Styles for Microlocs on Thin Hair
Finidng cute and easy styles while going through the process of thickening, and growing out your short and thin Microlocks, honestly, can be challenging. First of all, you had to decide and makeup in your mind that you would trust the process even starting out thin. You had to NOT care what ANYONE said or thought about ‘what you were doing to your hair.’ NO EXPLANATIONS to anyone, and with this came FREEDOM. Freedom to just BE.
My locs were started while my hair was short and thin so for the first 3-4 months I just wore my hair, mostly because it was too short to style anyway. Although new microlocs on thin hair will expose the scalp, and for some of us a lot of scalp, no worries though, there is help and believe it or not the hair is growing every day, so in the meantime and in-between time let’s experiment with 3 possible options.
#1 BANTU KNOTS
First, Bantu Knots, which even with short hair can offer the illusion of thicker more full hair. Bantu Knots are quick and easy and do not require much product. You can either sit under the dryer or wear them as your style for the day. You may just want to leave them overnight and take them down in the morning once they are dry. Simply moisten 3-5 locs with your favorite water/oil combination. Twisting from the root to tip, then winding around the base until wrapped, let dry.
Because I detest sitting under the dryer, I slept in my Bantu Knots, and unknotted them the following morning.
#2 SPONGE ROLLERS
Another option would be sponge rollers which are really easy. I was a little apprehensive about using sponge rollers because I wasn’t sure if they would pull too much on my hair, but they did not. I purchased, from my local beauty supply store, two packs of sponge rollers wrapped in a satin material that actually worked really well. If you are sponge rolling microlocs that are short in length you may only be able to put 2-3 locs on a roller, which is just fine since you’ll be sleeping with them in, which by the way, was not an uncomfortable experience either. I did use a small amount of Lotta-Body styling foam. In the morning I ended up with a stunningly super cute head of curls, that were tight, but I sprayed my curls with my Rose Water/Vitamin E. Mist, from Expressions LaceLocs. The curls lasted for days and each day looked better and better.
#3 Rods
Lastly, rods, which are my favorite! I did sit under the dryer for about an hour though. You may sleep in them if they are comfortable for you. I moistened my hair with my spray bottle of Rosewater/Vitamin E combination and a little bit of LottaBody styling foam. Rodded curls have the roller set effect and the curls drop a little every day which gives you a different look every day!
YES! I love the roller set! What do you think? Have you tried any of these styling options? If so, which is your favorite? If you haven’t tried any of them, you may want to. Whatever you decide I encourage you to flow in the limitlessness of possibility, to just try one or all of them.

Until we meet again, I’ll still be here, at Locs on the Journey!
